Quantitative Service Differentiation: A Square-Root Proportional Model

چکیده
Due to the open and dynamics nature of ubiquitous computing environments and services, quantitative service differentiation is needed to provide controllable quality of service (QoS) levels to meet changing system configuration and resource availability and to satisfy different requirements of applications and users. A proportional differentiation model was proposed in the DiffServ context, which states that QoS factors of certain classes of aggregated traffic be proportional to their differentiation weights. While it provides compelling proportionality fairness to clients, it lacks of the support of a server-side QoS optimization with respect to the resource allocation. In this paper, we propose and promote a square-root proportional differentiation model for delay-sensitive Internet services. Interestingly, both popular QoS factors with respect to delay, queueing delay and slowdown, are reciprocally proportional to the allocated resource usages. We formulate the problem of quantitative service differentiation as a resource allocation optimization towards the minimization of system delay, defined as the sum of weighted responsiveness of client request classes. We prove that the optimization-based resource allocation scheme essentially provides square-root proportional service differentiation to clients. We then propose a generalized ratebased resource allocation approach. Simulation results demonstrate that the approach provides quantitative service differentiation at a minimum cost of system delay.

Computing the loss differentiation parameters of the proportional differentiation service model
The proportional differentiation service model has emerged as a refined version of the DiffServ qualify of service (QoS) architecture. It relies on a series of parameters to enforce proportionally differentiated QoS criteria, such as queueing delay and packet loss. From the perspective of proportional loss differentiation, a large amount of work has been done on carrying out loss differentiatio...

We present a general analytical model for determining the location and pattern of wrinkles in thin membranes and for making preliminary estimates of their wavelength and amplitude. A rectangular membrane under simple shear and a square membrane subject to corner loads are analysed. In the first problem, our model predicts the wavelength and the wrinkle amplitude to be respectively inversely pro...

Green computing is a hot issue that has received a great amount of interests in the past few years. Energy proportionality is a principal to ensure that energy consumption is proportional to the system workload. Energy proportional design can effectively improve energy efficiency of computing systems. In this paper, an energy proportional model is proposed based on queuing theory and service di...
متن کاملOn Hilberg's Law and Its Links with Guiraud's Law
Hilberg (1990) supposed that finite-order excess entropy of a random human text is proportional to the square root of the text length. Assuming that Hilberg’s hypothesis is true, we derive Guiraud’s law, which states that the number of word types in a text is greater than proportional to the square root of the text length. Our derivation is based on some mathematical conjecture in coding theory...

Providing service differentiation in wireless networks has attracted much attention in recent research. Existing studies so far have focused on the design of MAC layer protocols to achieve distributed priority scheduling. While these works have been shown to achieve certain differentiation (higher throughput or lower delay for higher priority packets) at MAC layer, they did not consider the pro...
